Neoclassical labour market dynamics, chaos and the real wage Phillips curve

چکیده
The relationship between wage inflation and unemployment has been extensively investigated since the early work of Phillips [Phillips, A.W., 1958. The relation between unemployment and the rate of change of money wage rates in the U.K. 1861–1957. Economica 25, 283–299] and Lipsey [Lipsey, R.G., 1960. The relation between unemployment and the rate of change of money wage rates in the U.K. 1861–1957: a further analysis. Economica 27, 1–31], and it is still a matter of debate. In this paper we study the dynamics of a standard neoclassical labour market under the simplest Walrasian adjustment rule. We show that when consumption and leisure are sufficiently low substitutes, the unique Walrasian equilibrium of the economy can be destabilised, and regular or even chaotic fluctuations of wages and employment appear. This leads to an interesting resurrection of a real wage Phillips curve as a long-term phenomenon. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. JEL classification: E3; J0

The Influence of Labour market dynamics on Wage Formation
This paper surveys empirical Phillips curve and wage curve models for The Netherlands. It provides a simple theoretical model with which an appropriate specification for Phillips curve and wage curve models can be derived, which reckons with labour market tightness and fits into a flow model of the labour market. We find that in particular the short term unemployment-vacancy ratio and flows fro...
متن کاملInflation Dynamics in a Dutch Disease Economy
Abstract In this paper, the effect of foreign sector macro-variable on inflation dynamics and firms’ pricing behavior has been investigated in the context of a small open economy New Keynesian Phillips Curve. This curve is derived and estimated for a developing oil-exporting economy suffering from Dutch Disease. This version of NKPC is an extension of Leith and Malley’s (2007) small open econom...
متن کاملA Dynamic Panel Macroeconometric Model for Labour Markets: Evidence Across Australian States
We construct a dynamic panel error correction model of the Australian labour market using macroeconomic data across seven states and 27 years. Using panel cointegration tests, and fully modified OLS estimates, we test 3 competing long run hypotheses: real wage-productivity relation; real wage-marginal disutility relation; and the wage curve hypothesis. We find evidence to prefer the first. The ...
متن کاملA Neoclassical Model of The Phillips Curve Relation
This paper integrates the modern theory of unemployment with a limited participation model of money and asks whether such a framework can produce correlations like those associated with the Phillips curve as well as realistic labor market dynamics. The model incorporates both monetary and real shocks. The response of the economy to monetary policy shocks is consistent with recent evidence about...
متن کاملA Search Phillips Curve A generalised search model to understand the way economic policies shape the transmission of shocks
A generalised search model with matching on product, labour and financial markets is presented in order to analyse the impact of market frictions on the pass-through of shocks. The model includes an endogenous demand for money that arises from matching frictions on the financial market. Moreover, price posting on retail markets allows to establish a forward-looking Search Phillips Curve. The mo...
